Step 3: Research and Complete an Annotated Bibliography
An annotated bibliography is a works cited list with extra information. In addition to the standard information about a source included in a works cited, and a brief summary of the source and a suggestion as to how, and in what way, the source might be helpful to the researcher.
Step 1: Choose a topic that is relevant in American society.
- Shop around for a topic. Controversial issues? http://www.procon.org/ Societal issues?
- DATABASES<--Click here for credible sources for your research.
Step 2: Construct a Research Paper Proposal
- 1-2 paragraph summary of your topic and your interest in the topic
- Include your research question. A research question guides and centers your research. It should be clear, concise, and arguable. The research question should ideally be something that you are interested in or care about. Your research question is the main question about your topic that you want to answer through your research. It is written as a question because you do not yet know the answer and must research to arrive at a conclusion. To test your question, consider the following:
- Is the question clear?
- Is the question focused?
- Is the question complex?

- Develop a thesis statement. The thesis statement is what you are trying to prove through the research you are presenting. It is an educated guess that your research *should* prove to be true. Find a point that is arguable or debatable. During the course of your research, it is possible that you will want to change your thesis—that is okay!
